Kath Haddock’s Mills Research 2009

Background
In 1900 there are known to have been around 40 spinning, weaving, bleaching and dyeing, and waste processing mills in greater Ramsbottom. A century later, none were operational, though many had surviving traces. Most of these closures took place in the last four decades of the 20th Century. Kath Haddock collected information about this lost industrial landscape. It was a lengthy but very enjoyable project. Her research ended in 2009 and remains unpublished. But with Kath’s agreement, we intend to make it openly accessible via the Ramsbottom Heritage Society website. Future use and/or publication will be kept under review.
Procedure
It is very much our hope that this exhaustive summary of what was known in 2009 can be a foundation for further research into individual Ramsbottom mills. Especially valuable will be personal memories and anecdotes. To acknowledge the hundreds of hours of work that Kath put in, we are suggesting the following guidelines:
1. Reproduction of any content must first be agreed with John Leyland, the website’s administrator. He will get Kath’s approval if appropriate.
2. We welcome additions to Kath’s original findings, so that the website will become an accumulating database of record for the town’s textile heritage:
a) RHS will add photographs and historic plans+/maps of individual mills, where available, especially if contemporary with the mill’s period of operation.

b) Anyone can submit additional information on individual mills to John Leyland, the administrator, for addition to website entries. Kath Haddock’s original text, however, will remain unaltered.

c) Such additional information will be added in the Additional Research column. Contributors of new material are asked to detail in full the source(s) of their information, together with the date of their submission and their name.

d) Contact details will also be needed in case the RHS wants to pursue similar lines of enquiry. Such extra personal details beyond the name of contributors will be kept confidential.

This table is based on a document ‘List of Mills’ followed by individual files. In some cases the files aren’t present, so the table says ‘Research not found’ and also some mills are combined into a single document, e.g. Holcombe Brook and Redisher, Shuttleworth, Summerseat
