TURN MILL

Built about 1822/3 by Richard Howarth of Croston Close who ran the mill with his younger brother George. Water powered.

1844 Richard Howarth died. George Haworth died 1860.

1854 John Nuttall, a Shuttleworth farmer took a 99 year lease on the property. He demolished the old mill and built a new one in its place complete with steam engine. Nuttall was joined in the business by his four sons, John, Richard, James and William and the firm continued as John Nuttall & Sons until 1975. (Father John died 1861). Richard carried on the business in his own name until his death in 1896. Richard’s son, Edward, took over the running of the business until his death in 1907.

1907 Mill sold to Richard Ryden, a Blackburn cotton manufacturer.
1909 The Turn Manufacturing Co took it over for weaving printing and bleaching cloths.
1913 J.H. Howarth at Turn Mill - owned by the late Richard Nuttall [no reference course]
1930 Company wound up and mill empty for a while.
1933 J.D. Kerr, manufacturers of paints, varnishes & lacquers operated on the site fo a short time.
1937 Mill demolished.
