Lodge Mill

LODGE MILL

The history of Lodge Mill is covered comprehensively in John Simpson’s Book.

1845 Built by John and Henry Ramsbottom (their family also built and ran several mills in the Cheesden valley).

1851 Henry Ramsbottom - cotton spinner & manufacturer (Heap)

1860s Mill taken over by James Ramsbottom, second cousin to John & Henry.  Together with his sons he ran the firm of James Ramsbottom & Sons at Lodge Mill for 100 years.

1861 Henry Ramsbottom at Lodge Mill, Shuttleworth

1871 James Ramsbottom & Sons (cotton waste) Lodge Mill Shuttleworth.  John Ramsbottom also at Cheesden Lum, Walmersley. [Worrall]

1887 J Ramsbottom & Sons Lodge Mill - 9,000 spindles [Worrall]

1888 James Ramsbottom & Sons cotton spinners, Lodge Mill [Slater]

James died in 1880 leaving his sons, George, Joseph Henry & Dennis in charge. Joseph Henry outlived his brother so the business passed to his sons.

Extract from ‘Memories of Nuttall Village’ by K. McCarthy page 19: ‘In 1904 from Lodge Mill, George Ramsbottom’s father came in the Old Ground (namely George Ramsbottom)’.

1938 Taken over by William Kenyon & Sons Ltd of Dukinfield who ran Lodge Mill until its closure in 1966.  Mill divided into units and sold.

In 2002 there were plans to demolish the mill and build houses on the site.
