Conservation Working Group
Callender Street area
These streets were recently added to the Ramsbottom Conservation Area
These streets exhibit a variety of typical Victorian housing from some prestigious houses with their small front gardens in Callender St to the more typical industrial workers housing in Victoria St.
Some houses have basements, attics, bay windows and a few still have sashes. There are also some fine examples of coloured glass. Many doorways and windows have chamfered lintels and other decoration in stone. Houses often still have their original outhouses in the back yard.
Except for changes in windows, the exteriors of most of these houses have remained in their original condition, so that these streets are of major importance to the heritage, and the charm of Ramsbottom.
Maintaining the traditional appearance of the streets
The standard of care of these Victorian properties is a testament to the commitment of householders to maintain and restore the original appearance of their homes.
The stone structure
These houses are fine examples of their era and worthy of preservation.
Once the structure has been altered it may be very difficult to restore it.
Even painting the stonework is a significant change from its original condition.
Windows
Double-
Wooden window frames are more authentic than plastic.
The appearance of the original sash windows can be maintained
Original coloured glass windows may be incorporated into new windows
In a conservation area, velox windows are more appropriate than dormers.
These streets were incorporated into the Ramsbottom Conservation Area in 2007 and more information can be obtained from the Conservation Officer for Bury MBC at m.nightingale@bury.gov.uk
